Open Issues

The work plan of the group includes the following tasks:

  • Develop a short document for RDF implementors, clarifying the resource vs. literal string value issue and providing advice on best practice.
  • Consider possible RDF encoding changes (in light of above issue), carry out an impact analysis and make recommendations.
  • Finalise the provision of a persistent URI for the latest version of our XML schemes.
  • Develop an XML binding for Dublin Core™ metadata which supports all (or a substantial subset) of the features of the [WWW]DCMI Abstract Model. Revise DCMI XML schemas accordingly.
  • Finalise revisions to the Namespace Policy for the Dublin Core™ Metadata Initiative (DCMI) to align use of terminology with other DCMI recommendations.
  • Evaluate use of GRDDL as mechanism for transforming arbitrary DC/XML documents into RDF (DCMI Abstract Model).
  • Monitor W3C developments for encoding RDF in XHTML and revise current DC/XHTML guidelines as necessary.
  • Develop abstract model of 'DC application profiles'.
  • Consider developing a representation of the DCMI Box, Period and Point encoding schemes using the DCMI Abstract Model.
  • Finalize the DCMI Abstract Model document and move to DCMI Recommendation status.
  • Develop short document for RDF implementors, clarifying the resource vs. literal string value issue and providing advice on best practice.

Background

Information on discussions and decisions that were used to support the creation of this group.

The DCMI Architecture Forum has multiple roles:

  • First of all, the group addresses the practical need of implementers by drafting, discussing and agreeing to specifications and guidelines on how to express and encode Dublin Core™ metadata using mainstream Web technologies. This also includes work on an architectural roadmap describing the various options for Dublin Core™ deployment.
  • Secondly, on the basis of the work on specifications and guidelines, the group acts as a center of expertise that gives guidance to implementers on the basis of questions that arise in practical deployment of Dublin Core™ metadata. This activity includes cooperation with other DCMI groups within the DCMI that encounter issues of modeling and implementation.
  • Finally, it is also a discussion platform for all technical issues related to the deployment of Dublin Core™ metadata, including the use of new technologies that emerge from the World Wide Web Consortium and elsewhere.

The WG has strong links with the Registry Community, where work is underway to establish a Registry of DCMI Metadata Terms, in the first instance to be used by humans to register, search, navigate and extend vocabularies, but which will develop in the future into a system that can be used by applications to find the machine-readable schemas maintained by DCMI.

The work of the WG may also be influenced by liaison activities of the DCMI. For example, in 2001, an activity was started to look at the interoperability between DCMI and IEEE/LOM metadata (See the Memorandum of Understanding and Ottawa Communiqué). Results of this cross-standard activity may require further work in the Architecture WG to provide guidance on deployment strategies.

As the goal of the WG is to provide enabling technology to support the deployment of DC metadata based on existing specifications from DCMI, W3C and elsewhere, WG members will need some understanding both of various relevant technologies (XML, RDF, HTML, XHTML, XSLT ...) and of the kinds of metadata applications Dublin Core™ is being applied to.
