DCMI Kernel Metadata Community

Draft Vocabulary Proposal Form (July 2004)

This documents an open, three-step process for proposing a new vocabulary term for inclusion as a 'draft' term to complement the ERC/Kernel metadata vocabulary defined at http://dublincore.org/groups/kernel/spec.html .

Step 1. If you have not done so already, familiarize yourself with the content and style of the current vocabulary. Scan the vocabulary to confirm that there is no match for the term you have in mind. If there is a close match, consider contacting the creater of that term to see if its definition could be modified to incorporate your intended meaning. Fewer distinct terms are better than several very similar terms.

Step 2. If you decide to propose a new term, create a proposal using the form below. A proposal includes such things as term name, definition, and creator's email address. If it passes (all completed forms containing serious submissions will pass), it will be published in the 'draft' region of the vocabulary for a period of six months, after which it will be removed unless it is renewed (by resubmitting it) or attains provisional status.

During that period it is publicly accessible in the draft region of the vocabulary, and you are expected to respond to feedback, requests for clarification, and possibly modification in a collegial manner. This is an organic, community-built vocabulary. A term succeeds to the extent that it is accepted and used, and nothing prevents competing terms from being proposed.

Step 3. Once you have filled out the form below, email it to

        [email protected]

Any submission must be freely sharable. The Rights statement in the form must be left intact for the submission to be considered valid. Allow one week for it to appear in the published vocabulary where others can see it and begin using it.
