    Alasdair MacDonald is the Collections Manager (Metadata) at Edinburgh University Library, where he has worked since 2014. He has previously held positions at the Bodleian Library and National Library of Scotland. Alasdair has served on DCMI) Governing Board since 2017 and as the Chair since 2021. He is also the Vice Chair of the Metadata and Discovery Group Scotland Committee. Alasdair’s areas of professional practice and interest include metadata standards and interoperability, authority control and the application of library metadata for collections management workflows.

    Together in Practice: Comparing LCC and DDC Assignment Across Library of Congress Bibliographic Records

    Sungkyunkwan University

    Dr. Inkyung Choi (she/her) is an Assistant Professor at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), Seoul, South Korea. Her research focuses on metadata semantics and schema design, scalable metadata aggregation, data provenance modeling, and ontology engineering for data integration and interoperability. She holds a Ph.D. in Information Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and an M.S. from Syracuse University. Prior to joining SKKU, she was an Associate Research Scientist at OCLC and a Teaching Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

AI and the Transformation of Metadata Research and Practices: Global and Regional Perspectives

This edited book entitled “AI and the Transformation of Metadata Research and Practices – Global and Regional Perspectives” deals with the evolving landscape of AI applications for metadata creation and management by examining its potential benefits; addressing challenges and concerns; and exploring future trends. It aims to bridge knowledge gaps in the field by providing evidence-based insights and showcasing a diverse range of worldwide applications. It explores the anticipated impact of AI and its acceptance by metadata professionals worldwide, along with considering the transition from manual cataloguing to AI-integrated roles. A primary focus is the transformation of unstructured, intangible cultural heritage content into structured, machine-actionable knowledge, while ensuring that semantic and cultural nuances are preserved. The socio-technical issues of AI in metadata, ranging from multilingual extraction to morpho-translation are addressed. This work emphasises the need for combining human-in-the-loop workflows with robust governance frameworks to mitigate risks such as the authentication crisis of synthetic media (deepfakes), bias, hallucination and epistemic injustice. By serving as an indispensable resource for library and information science professionals, researchers, and students, the text hopes to realize AI's potential by ensuring that the AI implementation in metadata practices is both responsibly managed and beneficial to the community.
  • Ying-Hsang Liu

    Professorship of Predictive Analytics, Chemnitz University of Technology

    Ying-Hsang Liu is a researcher at Chemnitz University of Technology (Germany) in Predictive Analytics. With a Ph.D. in Information Science (Rutgers University, USA), he has held academic positions across five countries. His research focuses on human-centered data science, information retrieval, and AI-based systems, supported by grants from the ARC, ARDC, and Airbus. Dr. Liu has authored 65 peer-reviewed publications and two books, serves on ASIS&T and ALISE committees, and is a Distinguished Member of ASIS&T 2022.

Stanford at DCMI

Stanford University Libraries are a large network of over 20 academic campus libraries serving the Stanford community and beyond. We have long championed open source applications and open metadata, and are currently working, as part of the Blue Core initiative, to move to an linked open metadata environment based on the Library of Congress' BIBFRAME ontology, complementing our concurrent work in open-access scholarly communications initiatives. Stanford joined DCMI in 2023, and found here a rich space and community of practice for metadata-related topics where we can share our enthusiasm for open metadata, for interoperability and open information sharing and be inspired by, and learn from, the work of the DCMI community.
  • Nancy Lorimer

    Associate Director, Metadata Services

    Nancy Lorimer, Associate Director for Metadata Services at Stanford University specializes in BIBFRAME, metadata standards and ontologies. A former music cataloger, she led the development of a BIBFRAME extension for performed music, now being integrated BF proper. She is Chair of the PCC Metadata Application Profiles Working Group, which is responsible for development of BF and RDA application profiles for use by members, chair of the Share VDE Entity Working Group, a member of the BIBFRAME Interoperability Group. Currently she is working on BF metadata workflows for the Blue Core project.

This presentation introduces the University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) to the DCMI community, with a focus on the units and cross-unit collaborations that make up UTL's metadata and data ecosystem, and a reflection on why DCMI membership matters.

    May Chan is Head, Metadata Services at the University of Toronto Libraries, with 17 years of prior experience in public libraries at Vancouver and Burnaby, British Columbia. A Carpentries Instructor Trainer, she is committed to building computational and technical literacy among library practitioners, and has been active in cataloguing training and professional development in a variety of roles throughout her career. May currently serves as co-chair of the PCC Standing Committee on Training and the SCT Linked Data Training Task Group.

M2 (Metadata Matters) Report

This presentation will provide an update on the Metadata Matters (M2) initiative. It will cover the project's background, rationale, objectives, submission criteria, editorial board, workflow, operational model, pilot test, timeline, and future plans. The presentation will also seek feedback and advice from the board members on the project's direction and implementation.

    Hyoungjoo Park is an Associate Professor in the Department of Library and Information Science at Chungnam National University, Korea. Her research focuses on research data management and linked open data. She teaches courses in information retrieval, scholarly communication, and data curation.

DCMI Scholarly Resources Application Profile (forthcoming)

The DCMI Usage Board is reviewing for publication a new Scholarly Resources Application Profile (SRAP). SRAP uses new properties and classes that are being added to the Bibliographic Ontology (BIBO) namespace.
  • Tom Baker

    Technology Director

    DCMI

    Tom Baker has worked on Semantic Web standards since the 1990s. He helped organize DCMI, currently serving as its Technology Director and Usage Board co-chair, and co-chaired the W3C working group for SKOS. After earning a Stanford PhD in 1989, he worked as a researcher in Italy and Germany (GMD, Fraunhofer, Göttingen). He has taught at AIT Bangkok and Sungkyunkwan University Seoul, and has managed agricultural data projects with FAO, CABI, and currently the USDA National Agricultural Library.https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3741-6977
