The outcomes of the group work are expected to be:

an analysis of existing uses of WEMI which could benefit from an unconstrained vocabulary for those classes
a gathering of issues and questions regarding the possibilities for such a vocabulary
production of an unconstrained WEMI vocabulary with a specific proposal for the DCMI usage board
a repository of documentation and examples

The concept is explained in some detail in a Code4lib Journal article.¹ The work will take place on a dedicated github repository under DCMI² and which has been pre-populated with some documents and issues. There is a mailing list where announcements and meeting events will be distributed.³

Core Cultural Metadata Model IG

W3C "Dublin Core™ to PROV Mapping" designated a DCMI Recommended Resource

2013-12-04, The W3C Working Group Note Dublin Core™ to PROV Mapping has been designated a DCMI Recommended Resource. The document provides a mapping between the PROV-O OWL2 ontology and the Dublin Core™ Terms Vocabulary. The Dublin Core™ Metadata Terms mapping document is part of the PROV family of documents defining various aspects that are necessary to achieve the vision of inter-operable interchange of provenance information in heterogeneous environments such as the Web.

The term knowledge organization system (KOS) is intended to encompass all types of schemes for organizing information and promoting knowledge management. Different families of knowledge organization systems, including thesauri, classification schemes, subject heading systems, and taxonomies are widely recognized and applied in both modern and traditional information systems. Various types of KOS have been increasingly embodied as (Web) services to facilitate resource discovery and retrieval. Different agents, services, and applications need to communicate about KOS data in the form of transferring, exchange, transformation, mediation, migration, and integration. The information about a KOS, including its data model, type, protocol, status, responsible body, available format, affectivity, and other descriptive data are very important to terminology registries, service registries, vocabulary users (machine or human), and retrieval systems. At a minimum level, metadata for KOS resources will describe specific characteristics of a KOS, facilitate the discovery of KOS resources, assist in the evaluation of such resources for a particular application or use, and facilitate sharing, reusing, and collaboration of the KOS resources.

Overview

The focus of the work of the Community is to ensure that DC metadata users can describe resources and services in a way that will increase the accessibility of information for everyone. This supports the 'AccessForAll' approach to accessibility that differs from previous reliance solely on good resource design and construction. DCMI signed Memorandum of Understanding with the IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee P1484 (IEEE LTSC) in 2000 in order to jointly improve collaboration between the two organizations on interoperability between Dublin Core™ metadata and metadata based on the IEEE Learning Object Metadata (LOM) specification.
