The outcomes of the group work are expected to be:

an analysis of existing uses of WEMI which could benefit from an unconstrained vocabulary for those classes

a gathering of issues and questions regarding the possibilities for such a vocabulary

production of an unconstrained WEMI vocabulary with a specific proposal for the DCMI usage board

a repository of documentation and examples

The concept is explained in some detail in a Code4lib Journal article.1 The work will take place on a dedicated github repository under DCMI2 and which has been pre-populated with some documents and issues.

The Architecture Forum is where interested participants in the DCMI community can raise issues related to data models, emerging technologies, or best practices for expressing, encoding, or using metadata in the Dublin Core™ style. Discussions there can occasionally lead to the formation of an ad-hoc task group for addressing a specific issue or developing a technical specification.

Previously, DCMI has used the term community to describe a long-running group with a shared interest around a particular theme, and task-group to describe a time-limited group with a defined goal. Some variations on this approach have appeared over the years, such as special interest groups.

## News and Announcements

**DCMI/NKOS Task Group established**

2009-12-21, A new Task Group has been established under the name [DCMI/NKOS Task Group](/groups/nkos/) that targets to develop a Dublin Core™ Application Profile for KOS (Knowledge Organization Systems) resources based on the work of the [NKOS group](http://nkos.slis.kent.edu/). This Task Group is led by Marcia Zeng of the School of Information and Library Science at Kent State University, and Gail Hodge of Information International Associates, Inc. (IIa) who both have become members of the [DCMI Advisory Board](/about/advisory/).
-->

The term knowledge organization system (KOS) is intended to encompass all types of schemes for organizing information and promoting knowledge management. Different families of knowledge organization systems, including thesauri, classification schemes, subject heading systems, and taxonomies are widely recognized and applied in both modern and traditional information systems. Various types of KOS have been increasingly embodied as (Web) services to facilitate resource discovery and retrieval. Different agents, services, and applications need to communicate about KOS data in the form of transferring, exchange, transformation, mediation, migration, and integration. The information about a KOS, including its data model, type, protocol, status, responsible body, available format, affectivity, and other descriptive data are very important to terminology registries, service registries, vocabulary users (machine or human), and retrieval systems. At a minimum level, metadata for KOS resources will describe specific characteristics of a KOS, facilitate the discovery of KOS resources, assist in the evaluation of such resources for a particular application or use, and facilitate sharing, reusing, and collaboration of the KOS resources.

The focus of the work of the Community is to ensure that DC metadata users can describe resources and services in a way that will increase the accessibility of information for everyone. This supports the 'AccessForAll' approach to accessibility that differs from previous reliance solely on good resource design and construction. The AccessForAll approach adopts the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities aiming to make the online world inclusive.
