1. Introduction

In January 2008, DCMI released "Expressing Dublin Core™ metadata in the Resource Description Framework (RDF)" as a DCMI Recommendation [DC-RDF]. This Recommendation replaces two legacy DCMI documents:

1. Introduction

This document provides guidelines for people implementing Dublin Core™ [DCMI] metadata applications using XML [XML]. It considers both simple (unqualified) DC and qualified DC applications. In each case, the underlying metadata model is described (in a syntax neutral way), followed by some specific guidelines for XML implementations. Some guidance on the use of non-DC metadata is also provided.

The Dublin Core™ Metadata Element Set is a collection of fifteen elements designed by librarians to categorize and catalog documents. The elements are sufficiently general that they are suitable for categorizing and describing XML-Data schemas. This paper proposes a schema, based on Dublin Core™ elements, and then gives guidelines for its application in XML-Data schemas.

This document describes a MoinMoin wiki syntax for a Description Set Profile as defined in the DCMI Working Draft "Description Set Profiles: A constraint language for Dublin Core™ Application Profiles" of March 2008 [DC-DSP], which in turn is based on the DCMI Abstract Model [ABSTRACT-MODEL]. It is recommended to have some understanding of the concepts of Description Set Profile (abbreviated DSP in the rest of this document) before reading this document.

This document specifies a set of conventions by which a DC metadata description set can be can be represented within an X/HTML Web page using X/HTML elements and attributes. Formally, it defines a meta data profile for HTML and XHTML; the profile is identified by the URI http://dublincore.org/specifications/dublin-core/dc-html/2008-08-04/ and is referred to in this document as the "DC-HTML" meta data profile.

1. Introduction

The "Description Set Model" of the DCMI Abstract Model [DCAM] describes the constructs that make up a DC metadata description set. This document specifies a syntax for serialising, or representing, a DC metadata description set in plain text. The format is referred to as "DC-Text". A plain text format for serialisation of such description sets is useful as a means of presenting examples in a human-readable form which highlights the constructs of the DCMI Abstract Model, and also as a means of comparing the information represented in other machine-processable formats.
