This document is an up-to-date, authoritative specification of all metadata terms maintained by the Dublin Core™ Metadata Initiative. Included are the fifteen terms of the Dublin Core™ Metadata Element Set (also known as "the Dublin Core") plus several dozen properties, classes, datatypes, and vocabulary encoding schemes. The "Dublin Core" plus these extension vocabularies are collectively referred to as "DCMI metadata terms" ("Dublin Core terms" for short). These terms are intended to be used in combination with metadata terms from other, compatible vocabularies in the context of application profiles.

1. Introduction

This document provides guidelines for people implementing Dublin Core™ [DCMI] metadata applications using XML [XML]. It considers both simple (unqualified) DC and qualified DC applications. In each case, the underlying metadata model is described (in a syntax neutral way), followed by some specific guidelines for XML implementations. Some guidance on the use of non-DC metadata is also provided.

It is often desirable to encode or _serialise_simple structured data within a text string. Some generic methods are in common use. Borrowing conventions from natural languages, commas (,) and semi-colons (;) are frequently used as list separators. Similarly, comma-separated values (CSV) and tab-separated values (TSV) are common export formats from spreadsheet and database software, with _line feeds_separating rows or tuples. Dots (.) and dashes (-) are sometimes used to imply hierarchies, particularly in thesaurus applications. The eXtensible Markup Language [XML] provides a more general solution, using tags contained within angle brackets (<, >) to indicate structure.

This document specifies an abstract model for Dublin Core™ metadata. The primary purpose of this document is to specify the components and constructs used in Dublin Core™ metadata. It defines the nature of the components used and describes how those components are combined to create information structures. It provides an information model which is independent of any particular encoding syntax. Such an information model allows us to gain a better understanding of the kinds of descriptions that we are encoding and facilitates the development of better mappings and cross-syntax translations.

The Dublin Core™ Metadata Element Set is a vocabulary of fifteen properties for use in resource description. The name "Dublin" is due to its origin at a 1995 invitational workshop in Dublin, Ohio; "core" because its elements are broad and generic, usable for describing a wide range of resources.

DCMI Term Names

The Dublin Core™ Metadata Initiative maintains sets of metadata terms. Each metadata term is assigned a name -- a character string or "token" that is unique in the context of a particular DCMI term set [DCMI-TERMS]. In accordance with the DCMI Namespace Policy, the name of a term is appended to the URI of a DCMI namespace to construct a globally unique identifier (URI) for that particular term [DCMI-NAMESPACE]. The typology of DCMI metadata terms is described in the DCMI Grammatical Principles [DCMI-PRINCIPLES].

Introduction

This document presents the results of a process to develop exemplary qualifiers for the Dublin Core™ Metadata Element Set ( DCMES). The qualifiers listed here were identified in element-specific working groups of the Dublin Core™ Metadata Initiative ( DCMI) and judged by the DCMI Usage Committee to be in conformance with principles of good practice for the qualification of Dublin Core™ metadata elements. Working groups proposed candidate qualifiers judged likely to be of widespread use (and hence to increase the likelihood of interoperability among applications) and these proposals were subsequently debated and balloted by the DCMI Usage Committee.
