Role properties for Dublin-Core-based metadata

The DCMI Usage Board, together with the Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of Congress, is pleased to announce the availability of a sub-set of MARC Relator terms as role properties which refine the "agent" elements of Dublin Core™ (Creator, Contributor, and Publisher). The use of MARC Relator terms will allow designers of Dublin-Core-based metadata applications to distinguish between different types of Contributor, such as Illustrator or Translator (see guidelines). Public Comment on changes to the DCMI Type Vocabulary

The DCMI Usage Board has proposed some minor editorial changes to terms in the DCMI Type Vocabulary. The changes will be available for Public Comment until 31 January 2006.

Presentation on joint work between DCMI and IEEE/LOM

In the context of the joint work item between DCMI and IEEE/LOM to develop a recommended representation of the metadata elements of the IEEE Learning Object Metadata Standard in the Dublin Core™ Abstract Model, Mikael Nilsson made a presentation to the IEEE/LOM meeting in Orlando in October 2005 outlining the approach and the current status.

New co-chair appointed for DCMI Global Corporate Circle

DC-2006 Program Chairs and Coordinators appointed

In preparation for DC-2006, to be held 3-6 October 2006 in Manzanillo (Colima) in Mexico, Javier Solorio Lagunas of the University of Colima and Thomas Baker of DCMI have been appointed Program Chairs, while Lourdes Feria Basurto of the University of Colima and Makx Dekkers of DCMI have taken on responsibility as coordinators of the event. The Call for Papers is scheduled for publication in January 2006.

DC-2005 papers now online

The papers from the DC-2005 conference, held from 12-15 September 2005 in Legans (Madrid) are now online in the Dublin Core™ Conference Paper Repository. The Repository already contained the papers from the DC-2002 (Florence), DC-2003 (Seattle) and DC-2004 (Shanghai) conferences. Access is available through the link to Conference Papers in the left-hand navigation bar on the DCMI Home page.

DCMI Usage Board meets in Madrid

The DCMI Usage Board met in Madrid on 9-10 September 2005. A large batch of editorial changes to existing elements and Type Vocabulary terms clarifications of wording, updated references, and the like will be posted on 7 November 2005 for a public comment period prior to final approval. The comment period will also cover revisions to existing recommendations related to Dublin Core™ Structured Values.

DC-2005 in Madrid well attended

this year's conference and workshop, DC-2005, that was held from 12 through 15 September 2005 in Leganés (Madrid) was attended by 214 attendes from 33 countries. Participants were enthusiastic about the facilities provided by the University of Carlos III and the programme, including four keynotes, five tutorials, fourteen long papers, eighteen short papers, fourteen Working Group meetings and ten special sessions. More information is available on the conference Web site, and the papers are expected to be available soon in the Dublin Core™ Conference Paper Repository.

DCMI Conference Papers hosted by Simon Fraser University

Joseph T. Tennis, Assistant Professor at The University of British Columbia, along with Mark Jordan and Brian Owen of Simon Fraser University's WAC Bennett Library and Brad Allen at Siderean Software, have established the Dublin Core™ Conference Paper Repository. The repository provides access to the papers and posters delivered at DCMI Conferences from 2002 through 2004. Addition of the papers of DC-2005 is expected very soon. Built on open source software (MySQL, Linux, and Apache Tomcat) and displayed through Siderean Software's Seamark faceted navigation, this Repository offers the metadata community a focused and easy access to these papers. Access is available through the link to Conference Papers in the left-hand navigation bar on the DCMI Home page.

Public comment for revisions of four Recommendations

At their next meeting, in Madrid on 9-10 September 2005, the DCMI Usage Board will review the revised versions of four existing DCMI recommendations: Dublin Core™ Structured Values, the DCMI Box Encoding Scheme, the DCMI Period Encoding Scheme, and the DCMI Point Encoding Scheme.

New version of Dublin Core™ user guide available

A new version of Using Dublin Core, the official user guide to Dublin Core™ metadata, is now available. The updated version includes guidance for new terms approved by the Usage Board, as well as new sections on the DCMI Abstract Model and references to newly recommended documentation available for implementers.
