Update August 2006

Since the responsibility for Maintenance Agency activities was turned over
to the Directorate after DC-2005, the only task on the 2006 work plan was to
work on guidelines for national standardization. A call was sent out for contributions
from people with experience, but only a single contribution from one country
was received and more are needed. Some follow-up activities didn't give more
contributions. The Working Group chair considers other options.
Update of standard activities:

Maintenance Agency for ISO 15836

The role of DCMI as the official ISO Maintenance Agency for ISO 15836 The Dublin Core™ Metadata Element Set has been discussed with the Secretariat of ISO TC46/SC4. One important aspect of the Maintenance Agency responsibilities is to promote the Dublin Core™ Standard through conferences, presentations, publications and the publication of implementation tools such as guidelines, schemas and specifications. As ISO 15836 is not a complicated standard (describing the basic 15 elements), it was agreed that there is no need for the Maintenance Agency to process defect reports and Approved Amendments.

Evolving role for DCMI Standards Working Group

After the meeting of the DCMI Standards Working Group at DC-2005 in Madrid, the DCMI Advisory Board approved a proposal to shift responsibility for DCMI's activity as the Maintenance Agency of formal standards from the Working Group to the DCMI Directorate. In this new context, Leif Andresen will continue his role as liaison between the DCMI and standards bodies such as ISO (for ISO 15836), NISO (for Z39.85), and IETF (for RFC 2413 and updates). In 2006, the DCMI Standards Working Group will focus on producing guidelines for national standardization and on helping to coordinate a TC46/SC4 meeting in February 2006. Leif Andresen will continue as chair of the working group.
