DCMI Cultural Heritage Metadata Task Group

The goal of this task group is to identify the challenges of metadata for cultural heritage and to provide a simple cross-community metadata model for Cultural Heritage Objects and give a recommendation for the development of DCMI Application Profiles. The recommendation will provide a basis for the development of Application Profiles / Description Set Profiles for different types of Cultural Heritage Objects.

Overview

The focus of the work of the Community is to ensure that DC metadata users can describe resources and services in a way that will increase the accessibility of information for everyone. This supports the 'AccessForAll' approach to accessibility that differs from previous reliance solely on good resource design and construction. Charter

Review RFC 2413 and propose appropriate corrections and clarifications. The working group should review RFC 2413 definitions for the elements CREATOR, CONTRIBUTOR and PUBLISHER, and propose any corrections and clarifications for a revision of RFC 2413. The resulting proposal should include proposed rewording of the definitions and the reasoning to support the change, as well as important counter arguments that emerge from the mailing list discussions. All such recommendations should be made with the objective of enhancing clarity while minimizing impact on existing applications. Working group members should avoid proposing changes without clear evidence that such changes will correct errors or improve the understandability previously agreed upon Dublin Core semantics. This task is of the highest priority and should be completed within 4 weeks of establishing the working group.

A list of as yet unresolved issues, or those ideas or problems that are still under discussion.

The first task of this group is to collect a series of 'case studies' or practical examples of how different organisations and individuals are handling metadata and the moving image. It's always interesting to see what other people are doing - not just from a theoretical perspective, but from the practical realities of small budgets and pragmatic compromise.
