Mnemosyne
Hans Brandhorst (Leiden, 14-07-1956), is an independent art historian, editor of the Iconclass system and Arkyves. Together with Etienne Posthumus, he has created the online Iconclass browser and the Arkyves website. He has published on illuminated manuscripts, emblems and devices, iconography and classification, and digital humanities. He was trained in art history at Leiden University and has been using Iconclass as an iconographer since the 1980s. He was part of the team at Utrecht University that created the computer version of the system in the 1990s, and he has been acting as editor of the online Iconclass system since 2000. His primary research focus is the simple question “What am I looking at?" in an iconographical sense. His theoretical work deals with the issues of how humanities scholars, in particular iconographers, can collaborate and enrich each other's research results rather than repeat and duplicate efforts. He believes that to accomplish this, the use of a shared vocabulary for the description of the content of cultural artefacts - Iconclass - is an important condition.
Besides the editorship of Iconclass and Arkyves, Hans Brandhorst is also involved in the digitization of
Kirschbaum’s Lexikon der Christlichen Ikonographie for Brill Publishers, and he is on the Editorial
Advisory Board of the Journal Visual Resources. Recently he founded, together with André van de Waal,
the “Henri van de Waal Foundation”, dedicated to iconographic research with the help of modern
technology such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

Automated indexing is only as good as the training set, or rules that are available for the domain. It’s important to learn what type of content a pre-trained algorithm has been trained on. Consider what type of content is readily available to train an algorithm—what’s popular and what’s available. Scholarly and historical content is not available in consumable formats at the large volume that is required for machine learning. There are exceptions such as science and medicine where large well documented collections are available. This panel will discuss the current state of automated categorization covering domains including research data, art history, and scientific publishing. The goal is to provide practical advice on how to take meaningful steps towards building the infrastructure needed for sustainable automated indexing.

The digital legal deposit unit at LAC acquires digital publications in several ways, including web form submissions, SFTP deliveries of ONIX metadata and e-books, harvested ETD-MS metadata and theses/dissertations from institutional repositories, and automated transfers of MARC metadata and publications from government departments. We have developed customized metadata transformations for each of these ingest streams. We enrich the publisher-supplied metadata to create standardized MODS records for all of the publications in our Preservica repository. The MODS records then undergo an additional transformation into MARC format before we load them to our library catalogue. The goal is to leverage publisher-supplied metadata to automate (as much as possible) the creation of library catalogue records for digital publications while maintaining acceptable standards of metadata quality. Transforming the various types of metadata that we receive into library catalogue records has been an interesting challenge. Arlene will share LAC's experiences and lessons learned.

Abstract:

Brazil has a long tradition of creating interoperable networks of open access digital resources. In 2002 the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD) was created, which used a standard for the description of documents based on a specific Interoperability Metadata Standard for Electronic Theses and Dissertations, the ETD-MS. In the second half of the 2000s, the Brazilian Portal for Scientific Publications and Data (OasisBr) was also created, which was organized around the OAI-DC standard for metadata description. Finally, from 2018 onwards, OasisBr starts to aggregate research data in addition to textual scientific objects. To describe this type of resource, the DataCite standard was used as a basis. Even more, another extension of OasisBr is underway, with the construction of a Current Research Information System nationwide, called BrCris. The latter is based on the VIVO Ontology for the description of entities and relationships. The intended audience of this presentation is the data analysts, the librarians and the open digital repositories stakeholders.

Semantic architecture is a unique architecture of Digital Humanities application systems, and also a capability brought by the maturity of semantic technology. Specifically, it means the digital knowledge content in Digital Humanities platform has a certain structure which can be described and expressed in the form of Ontology, Linked Data, Knowledge Graph, etc.. For example, various vocabularies which make the characters, attributes, and relationships of various objects(persons, places, temporal, events,etc..) can be described and encoded so that computers can process these semantic data (which can be understood as RDF data). And then the semantic data can be considered as "understandable" by the machine, therefore a large amount of digital content in the whole knowledge base can be regarded as a digital twin of the real world, It can even be used to make the machine carry out certain "factual reasoning". With this presentation, the presenters will try to explain the design and Cloud Native based implementation of the semantic architecture of Digital Humanities Platform at Shanghai Library.

          National Library of Korea
I'm Yoonkyung Choi who is the National Library of Korea (NLK) librarian. I've been working at the bibliographic control division in NLK as a deputy manager since 2016. I'm charge of developing and maintaining library metadata standards and metadata service. I'm participating in the revision of the Korean cataloging rules as a cataloging member of the Korean Library Association. I have bachelor, master, and Ph.D degrees in Library and Information Science. Before working at the NLK, I had studied information organization including metadata and subject access, and participated in various projects in graduate school. When working here, I undertook a lot of projects related to metadata standardization, cooperative cataloging services and data quality improvement at national level. Currently, I'm interested in the linked data, transitioning to BIBFRAME and automation and improvement of cataloging workflow using new technology.

The National Library of Korea (NLK) as the representative library in Korea has carried on various business related metadata standardization for Korean libraries.
In Member's Forum, I'm going to introduce the NLK's role and practice for metadata standardization in Korea and also the ongoing activities as the DCMI regional member.
For example, we are developing and updating the KORMARC (Korean MARC) as the Korean Industrial Standards (KS) for the traditional bibliographic data, and translating and updating various metadata schemes-DC, MODS, etc. - in Korean for Korean libraries, etc.
Also, I will share our plan for transition to BIBFRAME for our bibliographic data in the future.

Dublin Core is commonly used for description of Doctoral dissertations, Master's thesis and other resources institutions of higher education such as universities and polytechnics store and make available via their institutional repositories. Since DC Metadata Terms do not contain all core metadata elements required even for simple description of these materials, many proprietary extensions to Dublin Core have been created, on national, regional and institutional levels.
In order to make Dublin Core a more valuable tool and to foster usage of Dublin Core for description of scholarly resources, the National Library of Finland (NLF) proposed development of Scholarly Works Application Profile (SRAP). The proposal was approved by the Dublin Core Governing Board, and the Dublin Core SRAP working group was established in Spring 2021. The working group chose a draft created in NLF as the starting point for its ongoing work.
See https://github.com/dcmi/dc-srap for the current status of the draft, and additional information about the project.

Since decades, the Interoperability between knowledge organisation systems (KOS) has been amongst major challenges in German libraries. The KOS landscape of Germany is marked with numerous indexing systems; the majority of libraries use more than one system for indexing, and over 50% of the libraries according to recent statistics use home-grown systems. The project coli-conc addressed this issue and has developed services that enable a uniform access to and an easy sharing of KOS, support computer-assisted mappings between various KOS and facilitate collection, storage and management of both KOS and their mappings on a single platform.
This workshop will offer an insight into the service portfolio of coli-conc and demonstrate the functionalities of the mapping tool Cocoda with a hands-on session for the widely-used library KOS like Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, Wikidata, and Regensburg Classification. If you are interested in working with other KOS that are relevant to your library or country, please email us and we will be glad to add them to our agenda and data pool.

Emma Griffiths received her PhD at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada studying how molecular markers known as inserts and deletions can be used to augment traditional approaches to understanding bacterial phylogeny. Her postdoctoral work focused on how contextual data standards such as ontologies, improve data harmonization and integration in public health and food safety genomics. She is a member of the Standards Council of Canada and is engaged in many contextual data (“metadata”) harmonization initiatives - both Canadian and international - including the development of an ISO standard for the use of whole genome sequencing and contextual data in the typing and genomic characterization of foodborne bacteria, and the development of an international public health data standard for CanCOGeN - Canada’s SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance initiative. She is currently a research associate at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada.

Abstract:

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is a powerful tool for tracking and understanding the spread of pathogens impacting environmental, animal and human health. Contextual data (“metadata”) consists of laboratory (e.g. date and location of testing, cycle threshold (CT) values), clinical (e.g. hospitalization, outcomes), epidemiological (e.g. age, gender, exposures) and methods (sampling, sequencing, bioinformatics) information that enables the interpretation of sequence data and the production of actionable results for public health and food safety programs. Contextual data is often collected on a project-specific basis according to local needs and reporting requirements which results in the collection of different data types at different levels of granularity, with different meanings and implicit bias of variables and attributes. Furthermore, the information is often collected as free text, or if structured, according to organization or initiative-specific data dictionaries, using different fields, terms, formats, abbreviations, and jargon. The variability in the way information is encoded in private databases tends to propagate to public repositories, which makes the information more difficult to interpret and to use. Our work focuses on the development and implementation of contextual data standards that can improve data harmonization and integration in different Canadian and international initiatives. Examples of our work include the development of two ontologies - the Food Ontology (FoodOn) and the Genomic Epidemiology Ontology (GenEpiO) - as part of the IRIDA project (Canada’s public health Integrated Rapid Infectious Disease Analysis bioinformatics platform), an ISO standard for genomic characterization of foodborne bacteria, and an international standard for SARS-CoV-2 pandemic genomic surveillance.

AGRIS, a global public service provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is a central service which manages diverse resources crossing many boundaries such as resource types, languages, geographic regions, providers, and domains. This presentation will focus on three important components: (1) a metadata infrastructure which unifies the management and access of bibliographic and research data, (2) the indexing approach enabled through the AGROVOC for its multilingualism and semantic strategies, and (3) a unified platform and service for the community that enables two ways for the data providers, partners, and users to contribute to the AGRIS core knowledgebase.

Many who come to metadata think of it as problem-solving, and they are not wrong. However, solving the immediate organizational and representational concern may introduce new problems for the designers and engineers of such systems. Metadata education is about moving design and implementation of metadata out of the problem-solving zone and into a realm of expertise. In order to do this, metadata education needs to consider time, domains, context, interoperability, and ethics. In this brief talk, I cover how we think about curriculum related to metadata that moves it from problem-solving to problem solved.
