The Dublin Core™ metadata element set was published by the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) in 2001 as ANSI/NISO Z39.85. The standard has periodically been revised and republished, most recently in 2013.

DCMI signed Memorandum of Understanding with the IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee P1484 (IEEE LTSC) in 2000 in order to jointly improve collaboration between the two organizations on interoperability between Dublin Core™ metadata and metadata based on the IEEE Learning Object Metadata (LOM) specification.
