This Update is the second monthly edition of Executive team informal reporting on its activities. The goal is to selectively comment on work we think is of interest to the DCMI advisory bodies and the larger DCMI community.

NISO/DCMI webinar series
- DC-2012, Malaysia
Conference planning for DC-2012 in Malaysia is well underway. In fact, since we will be collocate with Knowledge Technology Week 2012 which has a much earlier planning cycle, we are somewhat ahead of where we normally would be at week -36. To date:
- Keynote speakers and tutorial presenters have been determined: Dan Brickley and Karen Coyle will give keynote addresses. We will not have abstracts for the keynotes for a while. I'll report here in Update when the topics are set. Since DC-2012 delegates will also be able to attend the remaining 4 keynotes of Knowledge Technology Week 2012 (KTW), I'll also report on those presenters as soon as they have been determined and posted. Sam Oh and Karen Coyle will each be doing a 1/2 day tutorial. Again, as soon as the tutorial abstracts have been determined, I'll report. The presenters page is already up on the conference website. If you are thinking you might attend DC-2012, why not let people know at Lanyrd and LinkIn Events.
- The Call for Participation has been up on the website at http://purl.org/dcevents/dc-2012/cfp for several weeks and linked through the conference site navigation. The Call was distributed through the DCMI 'announce' set of listservs (approximately 40 lists) and has already been tweeted through DCMI. Both ascii version and a formated version are available for further distribution. Please feel free to forward and to encourage contributions—papers, project reports, posters, special and panel sessions.
- The solicitation emails for peer reviewers went out to the 96 registered reviewers in the OCS and 70 have agreed to serve. Again, the peer reviewers represent an excellent cross section of the DCMI community with reviewers coming from all parts of the globe. The current status of the Conference Committee (all track chairs plus the Program Commmittee membership) can be found on the conference website Organizing Team page.
- Since DC-2012 is collocated with Knowledge Technology Week 2012, I encourage you to start checking the KTW2012 website or the KTW2012 summary on the DC-2012 website. The prospects are high that this will be a truly exciting set of collocated meetings. Registration for DC-2012 will be part of the KTW2012 registration. As a result, we will be linking the DC-2012 registration out to the KTW2012 site when registration there is up and running.
The 2011 NISO.DCMI webinars were the second in the series and included three successful events:
- March 16, 2011—Topic: Metadata Harmonization: Making Standards Work Together with Mikael Nilsson (Webinar PDF 1.4MB);
- August 24, 2011—Topic: International Bibliographic Standards, Linked Data, and the Impact on Library Cataloging with Gordon Dunsire (Webinar PDF 1.4MB); and
- November 16, 2011—Topic: The RDA Vocabularies: Implementation, Extension, and Mapping with Diane Hillmann (Webinar PDF 7.9MB)
With the 2012 series, we are increasing the number of webinars from three to four. We have confirmed dates for all four and presenters and topics for the first two:
- February 22, 2012—Tentative Topic: Taking Library Data From Here to There with Karen Coyle
Libraries have been creating metadata for resources for well over a century. The good news is that library metadata is rules-based and that the library cataloging community has built up a wealth of knowledge about publications, their qualities, and the users who seek them. The bad news is that library practices were fixed long before computers would be used to store and retrieve the data. Library cataloging practice continues to have elements of the era of printed catalogs and alphabetized cards, and needs to modernize to take advantage of new information technologies. This metadata, however, exists today in tens of thousands of databases and there is a large sigh heard around the world whenever a librarian considers the need to make this massive change.
As with all large problems, this one becomes more tractable when broken into smaller pieces. Coyle will present her "five stars of library data," an analysis of the changes needed and some steps that libraries can begin to take immediately. She will also discuss the "open world" view of the linked data movement and how this view can increase the visibility of libraries in the global information space. This webinar will give an introduction to the types of changes that are needed as well as the value that can be realized in library services. Attendees will learn of some preparatory steps have already been taken, which should confirm that libraries have indeed begun the journey "From Here to There."
- April 25, 2012—Tentative Topic: Schema.org and Linked Data: complementary approaches to publishing data with Dan Brickley
Schema.org -- a collaboration of the Google, Yahoo!, and Bing search engines -- provides a way to include structured data in Web pages. Since its introduction in June 2011, the Schema.org vocabulary has grown to cover descriptive terms for content such movies, music, organizations, TV shows, products, locations, news items, and job listings. The goal of Schema.org is "to improve the display of search results, making it easier for people to find the right web pages." The Schema.org initiative has emerged as a focal point for publishers of structured data in Web pages, especially but not exclusively in the commercial sector.
This webinar will explore how the publication methods of Schema.org relate to the methods used to publish Linked Data. Must data providers commit to one or the other, or can the two approaches exist side-by-side, even reinforcing each other?

Please note that topics and presenters for the dates in August and October have yet to be determined. If you have suggestions for timely topics and/or accomplished presenters, please contact Tom Baker or post your suggestions to dcmi-feedback (at) dublincore (dot) net. A modest stipend awaits presenters as well as substantial fame—all for a task that can be done from the comfort of the presenter's home. While we are open to any topical suggestions from the DCMI community, discussions with NISO have identified a particular interest in science metadata or metadata involving large data sets supporting research (sounds like our Science and Metadata Community to me).
In the November Update, I announced the beginning of the Dublin to Drupal (D2D) project to prototype a Drupal website for DCMI. The first face-to-face meeting with the project team took place in Seattle on 21 November. A brief report of that meeting is available on the D2D website. A second face-to-face meeting in Seattle is scheduled for 4 February. Expect further reporting as the project progresses. Also, don't be surprised if Sarah, Mark or Isaac contact some of you individually in the information-gathering phase of the project. Their goal is to prototype Drupal working environments for several DCMI entities (e.g., Communities, Task Groups, boards, committees etc.) fairly early with testing and refinement to follow.
Joint OC/AB Task Group on membership programs
The Joint OC/AB Task Group on Membership Programs charged with reviewing the current criteria for membership in DCMI's Member & Partner programs has started it's work under the guidance of co-chairs Mike Crandall and Rachel Bruce. Task Group members include Ana Alice Baptista, Joseph Busch, Keven Liu, Emma Tonkin and Paul Walk. The charge of the Task Group was described in the November Update.

As at the end November 2011, we are in a relatively healthy cash flow position, to cover our current operational run rate for next 6 months.
We initiated the process to set up Paypal business account to facilitate donation programs while we are working on the details of the Donation program rollout. How the online donation system is implemented has a number of options. We also had several suggestions made regarding the program during the Advisory Board meeting at The Hague including one to earmark donations (e.g., conference attendance stipends). Once we have technical issues in hand, we'll be raising these more detailed questions for discussion with the Advisory Board.

- Schema.org Alignment Task Group
The DCMI Schema.org Alignment Task Group held a teleconference on 12 December to discuss a proposed mapping of DCMI metadata terms to terms in the Schema.org vocabulary. DCMI has previously declared formal mappings, notably with MARC Relator properties and the FOAF vocabulary. This task group would like to put into place a process for creating and maintaining such mappings in a more flexible manner and on a much larger scale.
The teleconference report highlights different potential uses for published mappings: as a social signal that different standards can work together, as a source of documentation for people who work with data, as a source of patterns for search-engine engineers, and as input into the further development of vocabularies and related applications.
Vocabularies can evolve, or more specifically, our understanding of how two vocabularies relate to each other can evolve, so alignments must be published in a way that allows them to be edited easily, yet transparently versioned, so the group agreed to experiment with publication methods that involve snapshot versioning, such as Mercurial or Git.
Finally, the group noted with interest that the Schema.org approach is to describe its terms in a formally tidy way with regard to domains and ranges—i.e., whether terms are meant to take "strings" or "things" as values—but to acknowledge and anticipate that implementation will be messier in practice. DCMI has also tried to take a tidy approach to ranges by maintaining "constrained" and "unconstrained" versions of the fifteen core elements, in parallel, in two separate namespaces—an approach that continues to prompt one of the Dublin Core community's most frequently asked questions. The DCMI Schema.org Alignment Task Group is moving towards a stance similar to that of Schema.org—formally tidy, but pragmatically tolerant.
